The town is located on the Gatineau River, near the intersection of Routes 105 and 107, and not far from Route 117. (Trans-Canada Highway). Kitigan Zibi (also known as River Desert) is a First Nations reservation of the Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg First Nation, an Algonquin tribe. It was named as Maniwaki 18 until 1994. It is located near the confluence of the Désert and Gatineau Rivers in the Outaouais region of Quebec, Canada, and borders the town of Maniwaki to the south. It is the largest Algonquin Nation in Canada in terms of both territory and population, with a total area of 210 square kilometres (81 square miles).
