On the Richelieu River in the Regional County Municipality of La Vallée-du-Richelieu, Mont-Saint-Hilaire is an off-island suburb of Montreal in southeastern Quebec, Canada. According to the 2011 census, the population was 18,200. The Mont Saint-Hilaire inspired the city’s name. Near Mont-Saint-Hilaire, there is a substantial deposit of the semi-precious mineral sodalite.
In 1694, Jean-Baptiste Hertel de Rouville received the seigniory of the city. A mountain village had developed by 1745, with the first chapel being constructed near the Richelieu River in 1798. A ferry service between Beloeil and Mont-Saint-Hilaire was established nearly twenty years later, in 1822. The St. Lawrence and Atlantic Railway built a bridge in 1848 that enabled Beloeil and St. Hilaire to be linked by rail.
After Rouville’s death, the Campbell family sold the mountain to Brigadier-General Andrew Gault, a British soldier, who kept it for 45 years. Before his death in 1958, Gault left the mountain to McGill University.
