Sainte-Julie is an off-island suburb of Montreal, located east of Montreal in the Marguerite-D’Youville Regional County Municipality in southwestern Quebec, Canada. According to the 2011 Census of Canada, the population was 30,104. Sainte-Julie was named one of the best places to live in Québec in 2009. Électrium, Hydro-electricity Quebec’s interpretation centre, is in Sainte-Julie. The Verchères course of the La Vallée du Richelieu Golf Club is also located in the area.
The territory of Sainte-Julie, which was part of the parish of Sainte-Anne-de-Varennes and was dubbed “Grand Coteau” informally, was part of the parish of Sainte-Anne-de-Varennes. The majority of these settlers came from Boucherville. Residents soon requested the establishment of their own parish in 1843, citing the Sainte-Anne-de-Varennes parish as being too far away. In 1850, they obtained permission to build a church on land owned by Julie Gauthier dite St-Germain, who requested that the parish be named after Julia of Corsica, a virgin martyr who lived in the fifth century A.D. Its full name is Sainte-Julie-de-Verchères, and it was granted city status in 1971.
