On the L’Assomption River, L’Assomption is an off-island suburb of Montreal in southwestern Quebec, Canada. It is the administrative centre of the L’Assomption Regional County Municipality. It is situated on the outskirts of the Montreal metropolitan area. The agricultural industries of the surrounding plains account for the majority of the economy. It is also the region’s cultural centre.
Pierre Legardeur de Repentigny was granted the L’Assomption Seigniory in 1647, named after the river of the same name, which had been named such since the seventeenth century. A settlement grew up within a broad horseshoe-shaped meander of the L’Assomption River between 1640 and 1700. Since ancient times, Amerindians have visited this location, which they named Outaragasipi, which means “widening river” in reference to the river’s direction. Since they would drag their canoes across the peninsula to avoid the meander, the settlement was first known as Le Portage.
L’Assomption was the main town on the road connecting Trois-Rivières and Montréal until Joliette grew into its own in 1863. It was closely associated with Collège de l’Assomption, which was established in 1832. Jean-Baptiste Meilleur, the first superintendent of education for Lower Canada (1842–55), was the guiding force behind this educational initiative. Sir Wilfrid Laurier, Canada’s seventh prime minister, was a popular student at the college.
Aside from all of these, there’s L’Assomption, a regional county municipality in Quebec’s Lanaudière district. L’Assomption is the seat. The town of L’Assomption is situated just north of Montreal.
