Louiseville is a town in the province of Quebec, Canada, in the Mauricie region. It’s on the north shore of Lac Saint-Pierre, at the mouth of the ‘Rivière-du-Loup.’ In France, Louiseville is twinned with Soissons, and in Belgium, with Cerfontaine.

Originally, the region was part of the Seigneurie Rivière-du-Loup. Intendant Jean Talon founded this seigniory in 1665, and it was granted to Charles Dugey Rozoy-de-Montreuil, a Carignan Regiment officer, in 1672. For a long time, the seigniory was also known as Rivière-Mannereuil.

The Récollets established a mission in 1714, dedicating it to Anthony of Padua’s patronage. The Ursulines took over the seigniory in 1722 and tried to rename it Saint-Antoine-de-la-Rivière-Saint-Jean, but the town was renamed Rivière-du-Loup or Rivière-du-Loup-en-Haut after the seigniory or local river.
