Otterburn Park is a small town in Quebec, Canada, located 40 kilometres east of Montreal. According to the 2011 Census of Canada, the population was 8,450. The town is located on the Richelieu River, south of Mont-Saint-Hilaire, and is one of Quebec’s officially bilingual cities.
Otterburn Park is a residential community that was once part of the Saint-Hilaire parish municipality, which was established in 1855. Since the municipality of Mont-Saint-Hilaire seceded from the parish municipality in 1950, it was all that remained. Otterburn Park was established in 1953, and town status was granted in 1969.
Otterburn Park started its transformation in the late 1800s, when it became a popular weekend destination for employees of the Grand Trunk Railway, which began running a weekend train from Bonaventure Station to Mont-Saint-Hilaire in 1885.
Summer cottages were purchased or constructed by sporadic recreational tourists, including railroad workers, spurring growth and, finally, permanent settlement. Otterburn Park was a neighbourhood within Mont-Saint-Hilaire parish until 1949. Otterburn Park was given its current name by popular vote in 1953.
In 1864, the St-Hilaire train tragedy occurred in Otterburn Park, when an immigrant train failed to stop at an open swing bridge and crashed into the Richelieu, killing nearly 100 people. The tragedy is still remembered as Canada’s worst train crash, and the bridge is still known as the Pont Noir, or black bridge.
