Rigaud is a city in the Vallée-du-Haut-Saint-Laurent region of southwestern Quebec, Canada. It is located in the county of Vaudreuil-Soulanges. It is situated at the confluence of the Ottawa and Rigaud rivers. It’s 70 kilometres west of Montreal and 130 kilometres east of Ottawa. According to the 2011 Census of Canada, the population was 7,346 people.
Before the arrival of the French, the Algonquins left the area due to brutal attacks by the Iroquois. Rigaud is situated on their traditional territory. In 1615, Étienne Brûlé was the first European to return to Ottawa. The brothers Pierre and François-Pierre de Rigaud de Vaudreuil, governors of New France, were granted the Seigneury of Rigaud in 1732, and the first settlers arrived in 1783, led by Lord Alain Chartier de Lobtinière.
The town grew quickly as a logging relay and a loading point for timber and cereals at the turn of the century. The founding of the parish of Sainte-Madeleine, the banal seigneurial mill on the Rigaud River, and the Outaouais crossing of Pointe-Fortune-Carillon. Rigaud is a significant regional centre and the seat of the Vaudreuil riding. Institutions and businesses in Rigaud underwent significant changes in the second half of the twentieth century, but the structure of local life remained consistent.
Mont-Rigaud, a hill with downhill ski runs, a private school, and a shrine dedicated to the Virgin Mary, is the main attraction. The “champs de patates,” a one-of-a-kind natural rock garden on the mountain, was named after a local legend that it was once a potato field that God turned to stone because the farmer worked on Sunday.
A rural neighbourhood known as “Mountain Ranches” is located on the opposite side of the mountain. The Sanctuary of Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes, the Collège Bourget, the legend of the Champ de guérêts, also known as the “potato field,” its maple and blueberry items, and the nearby microbrewery Le Castor are among the other attractions.
