Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue is a neighbourhood on the island of Montreal in southwestern Quebec, Canada. It is located at the western tip of the island. It was established as a parish in 1703, making it the second oldest community in Montreal’s West Island. Dorval, the oldest, was founded in 1667.

The Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue Canal (a Canadian National Historic Site), the Sainte-Anne Veterans’ Hospital, the Morgan Arboretum, and the L’Anse-à-l’Orme Nature Park are all worth visiting. In addition to John Abbott College and McGill University’s Macdonald Campus, which includes the J. S. Marshall Radar Observatory and the Canadian Aviation Heritage Centre, Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue is separated from Baie-d’Urfé by around 2 square kilometres of farmland.

Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue was founded on land that was once inhabited by both Algonquin and Iroquois tribes. Both nations recognised the natural strategic advantages of the location, which is situated between two important lakes (Lac des Deux-Montagnes and Lac Saint Louis) and near the two important rivers, which is the Saint Lawrence River and the Ottawa River.

The local post office opened in 1835. The Sainte-Anne Canal was completed in 1843, bringing a huge influx of travellers and merchants to the village. Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue was incorporated into the city of Montreal on January 1, 2002, as part of the 2002–2006 urban reorganisation of Montreal, and became part of the borough of L’Île-Bizard–Sainte-Geneviève–Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue. It was re-established as an independent city on January 1, 2006, following a change of government and a 2004 referendum.

Ste. Anne de Bellevue is one of the nicest old towns in suburban Montreal, being compact, walkable, and attractive. Ste. Anne de Bellevue now has a population of just over 5,000 residents. With a 40/40 split between anglophones and francophones, it’s one of the more bilingual towns on the West Island, and it’s a perfect day trip if you have a sunny afternoon to kill.

The town’s main thoroughfare is Ste. Anne Street. It’s a narrow and friendly street lined with a mix of everyday businesses like pharmacies and dépanneurs, as well as a plethora of cafés, restaurants, and bars, several of which have big terraces with views of the water. The streets of Ste. Anne is small, making for a fun walking experience.
