Many settlers were invited to travel to the former Terrebonne Seigneury and the surrounding area in the early 1860s by Édouard Masson (1826–1875), a merchant and member of the Legislative Council of the Province of Canada from 1856 to 1864. He was given land in this area in 1864 and contributed to the parish’s rapid growth, including the building of a sawmill and a flour mill at the outflow of the lake that would later be named after him.
The Mission of Sainte-Marguerite was established the same year, as was the Parish Municipality of Sainte-Marguerite-du-Lac-Masson, both named after Margaret of Antioch, who lived in the third century. The Lac-Masson Post Office opened in 1868.
When Sainte-Marguerite-du-Lac-Masson split up in 1959, the Town of Estérel was founded on the eastern side of Lake Masson. The Town of Sainte-Marguerite–Estérel was formed on October 10, 2001, when the Parish Municipality of Sainte-Marguerite-du-Lac-Masson and the Town of Estérel merged. The Town of Estérel was re-established on January 1, 2006, following a municipal referendum, and the Town of Sainte-Marguerite–Estérel reverted to its former name of Sainte-Marguerite-du-Lac-Masson.
