Schefferville is a small hamlet in northern Quebec that is in the center of Naskapi and Innu territory. It is located in Caniapiscau, a regional county municipality. Schefferville is located in the Labrador Peninsula’s heartland, between Knob and Pearce lakes, and is connected to Sept-Îles by a 500-kilometer railway line. Direct flights are also available from the city to Montreal, Quebec, and Sept-Îles.
Schefferville was named after Most Reverend Lionel Scheffer, the first bishop of Labrador-Schefferville. The city, which straddles the boundary between Quebec and Labrador and is situated at the northern end of the boreal forest and south of the tundra, owes its existence mostly to the exploited iron mines.
The little village is not linked to the provincial road network, although it may be reached by plane or rail via the Schefferville Airport. The northern end of Tshiuetin Rail Transportation, with service to Sept-Îles, is Schefferville.
