Since the Town of Maniwaki was built on land that was once part of the Kitigan Zibi Reserve, Maniwaki’s history is intertwined with that of the neighbouring Kitigan Zibi Reserve. Kitigan Zibi filed historical land claims on its municipal lands, some of which were resolved as recently as 2007.

Kitigan Zibi (also known as River Desert) is a First Nations reservation of the Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg First Nation, an Algonquin tribe. It was named as Maniwaki 18 until 1994. It is located near the confluence of the Désert and Gatineau Rivers in the Outaouais region of Quebec, Canada, and borders the town of Maniwaki to the south. It is the largest Algonquin Nation in Canada in terms of both territory and population, with a total area of 210 square kilometres (81 square miles).
